How KW Delivery Quickly Adapted and Took On Last Mile Delivery for FedEx

No excuses, only solutions

KW Delivery was founded by Paul LeBlanc ten years ago, with nothing more than a vehicle, a mobile phone, and a website to generate business. Over the past decade, he has expanded the business, and the team has grown to eleven drivers carrying out same-day, expedited, and special delivery services across Ontario, Canada.

At the heart of the business has always been a belief that customer experience is key, and that has influenced their company ethos of ‘no excuses, only solutions’. Whatever needs to be delivered, the team at KW Delivery will find a way to transport it safely and punctually to its final destination, even if the item in question happens to be a small aeroplane!

"We try to accommodate customer requests as much as we can by doing specialty deliveries. We’ve delivered things like a small plane!"

Focusing on B2B delivery of large items and industrial freight meant that last mile delivery was not an area of logistics that they had experience in or intended to branch out into because business was already booming.

Unfortunately, no one could predict the global pandemic that occurred in 2020, and KW Delivery was hit by the sudden downturn in commercial trading. With work drying up, the team had to be reduced to six drivers, and the question of whether the business would survive was on everyone’s mind.

Adapt or die

Entrepreneurial to his core, founder Paul LeBlanc knew he needed to find a new revenue stream for the business to survive the pandemic. That’s when he contacted and began discussions with FedEx about taking on their local last mile routes.

Desperate for couriers to help with the sudden spike in pandemic-triggered online shopping, this was one of those moments when supply perfectly met demand. FedEx swiftly assigned routes to KW Delivery and requested that they start work the next day.

Aware that the tools required for a ten-stop route differed greatly from those required for a one-hundred-and-fifty-stop route, Paul went looking for a last mile management tool that could help him organize his team and enable them to plan and efficiently manage this huge increase in delivery density. That’s when he found Circuit.

In less than forty-eight hours, KW Delivery had taken its first step into the world of last mile logistics, and they did not stumble. The whole team hit the ground running with easy-to-follow routes and reliably high delivery success rates. Their performance didn’t go unnoticed, and within the week, five more drivers had been added to the team.

"On the day we agreed the contract, I was looking for apps to help my team manage the high-volume routes, and frankly, it would have been disastrous if I hadn’t found Circuit.”

Delivery diversification

Pivoting their delivery model was initially born out of necessity, but Circuit simplified the operational aspect of managing last mile routes so effectively, making it possible and profitable that this service offering is now here to stay.

“We went from doing our standard stuff, which might have been 50 orders a day with no last mile deliveries, to doing 550.”

Building last mile experience within their loyal driver team and having a mixed delivery fleet of SUVs, cargo vans, and twenty-six-foot box trucks, KW Delivery is now perfectly positioned to offer freight and multi-drop delivery, helping them safeguard the business's future with more diverse revenue streams.

Their varied portfolio of clients now includes florists and meal prep delivery companies, clients that they would have previously turned away, assuming they couldn’t effectively service them. Photographic proof of delivery options in Circuit allow them to deliver these perishable items with a 100% success rate and client satisfaction.

Your world, your way

The future for KW Delivery looks bright as operations continue to grow across the freight and last mile arms of the business despite significant competition.

What gives them the winning edge is an unwavering belief that whatever the customer wants, it’s their job to find a way to deliver that, exemplified by their motto ‘your world, your way’

This unwavering dedication to five-star service and understanding that they act as representatives for their clients' brands when going door to door is a key ingredient in their recipe for success.

Note: Circuit for teams is saving thousands of businesses at least 20% on delivery costs. Try it free for 7 days.
